What kids learn in kindergarten
Kindergarten is where school math and reading begin. In math, children learn to count objects accurately, recognize the numerals 0 to 20, compare groups, and add and subtract small numbers with pictures and fingers. By the end of the year many children can find the partner that makes 10 and see a teen number as ten and some more.
In reading, the big jobs are letter names, letter sounds and hearing the sounds inside spoken words: first sounds, rhymes and syllables. That leads to sounding out short words like cat and sun and reading the first sight words. Writing practice starts with spelling those short words and noticing what makes a sentence. Science and life skills cover living and nonliving things, weather and seasons, and the five senses.
